Tim is a performer and advisor to Chase the Music.
Linda Shea is a professional clarinetist, international festival organizer, and teacher at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. A wonderful friend and supporter of Chase the Music. We look to Linda for advise and consulting on topics ranging from musical selection to fund-raising.
For mental health month, friends in Canada are posting a story a day about how music impacts people. The story of how Chase the Music got started is today’s story. Lots of magnificent stories already up there, so look around!
As we adjust programs to the current situation (COVID19), we knew it would be difficult to maintain the standards of impact and personal touch that Chase the Music performances are known for. How could we do that when our performers are ‘on-screen’ vs ‘in-person’.
Read more: Tim ShoveWe knew it would be different, but it wasn’t until we started that we realized that we could enhance the programs with the new media.
One of our first programs delivered via tel-conference was so amazing I needed to write about it. It wasn’t an instrumental event, nor singing – it was dance!
The performer, Donna Mejia brought her A-game to the little screen. The kiddo she was performing with – is Sarah who battles autism. She’s generally non-verbal. Our first session – was full of energy. Lots of movement, and directed interaction. Both Donna having Sarah do things, but also Sarah directing Donna. It’s Sarah choreographing Donnas movements. Think of it as remote controlling the dancer. Sarah did this with a speech board to communicate.
One thing interesting in this session was the ability to do things that you couldn’t in person. You can get bigger and smaller – with your distance from the screen. You can fill the screen with your face, or step way back. You can make your hands disproportionately large by positioning them close to the camera. You can also drop out of frame. And, you can return from a different location (leave to the left, but return from the bottom or right!) These are things that are much more difficult in person.
In the second session, Sarah was in a different mood. She appeared tired and quiet. What had worked before would not be effective now. Sarah lay on the couch, on a favorite pillow. Donna quickly adjusted her plan, and grabbed a pillow of her own. Just being quiet, and with very little verbal interaction, the two watched each other. You could see Sarah, loving not being forced into action, but being able to enjoy and share a few moments of true peacefulness in this time of chaos. Her eyes were attentive, aware and caring.
As they wrapped up, Sarah uttered “Donna” and “bye bye”. It may not seem like much, but it was something that just doesn’t happen with Sarah. It was beautiful moment that brought tears as the screens closed.
We’ll always Chase the Music -even as the world presents us new challenges. Thank you to Donna for showing us we will constantly adjust to the situation. Whether it is the big global changes, or the child directly in front of us needing a different interaction. We make huge connections and impacts. The power of these moments isn’t just for the child, but also for the parents and performers. Comments afterwards from Sarah’s mom, and Donna expressed how much strength and joy they both got from the interaction.
Donna Mejia is an associate professor of dance, and director of the graduate studies in dance at the University of Colorado. She and the University have partnered with Chase the Music for 3 years. She collaborates with us both as an individual and with her students to bring the joy of dance to children battling critical conditions.
Watch for an upcoming announcement from Chase the Music regarding a new program. One that will have an impact during this COVID(19) crisis, and long into the future!
The mountains are a beautiful place and everyone should enjoy them. It’s tough for a family with kids that are battling a critical disease to get away, but so important.
This past weekend Chase the Music partnered with Hope Kids and Murphys Resort in Estes Park, Colorado to provide a few days of fun away in the mountains. The families that came all had one thing in common, a child with a terminal diagnosis.
Sound Bridge Music enriches our community through music. We support and empower local musicians to make a difference.

Welcome!
You’re working on producing a piece of music, for a special child, or maybe a group of great kids. This is the beginning of something truly meaningful.
We want you to have a great experience as you work with Chase the Music. We hope this document gives you some ideas on how to make the best of your efforts.
Have fun.
Get to know the child / children. They’re great people, and really fun to spend time with. Talk with them. Hear their stories. Cry with their parents, but laugh with the kids.
Sometimes it’s difficult. People cry. That’s ok. It’s a good cry.
Let them know how much you care.
Play with all your heart.
Hugs are great.

A Chase the Music production is an event to provide an original piece of music to a child battling a critical condition. The song is written just for the child and is meant to be a truly meaningful gift.
There are 6 main components to any Chase the Music production:
· The child (or in some cases children)
· The songwriter / composer
· The performer(s)
· The song
· The venue
· The performance
The Child:
The child is someone battling a critical condition. A critical condition can be anything from a severe disease, cancer, birth defect, major injury, or major crisis. There are no ‘official guidelines’ on the age of a child – from birth to age 21 is a rough guide.
The songwriter / composer
This can be anyone with heart and talent. See the songwriters / composers guide. (*** also in process – though it’s pretty simple).
The performer(s)
Again, there are no rules. This can be a soloist (as is often the case for singer/songwriters)
The Song
The Chase the Music song is written specifically for and about the child(ren) of the event. It is important for the songwriter to get to know the child – to be able to write a song with real meaning and heart for the child.
The Venue
The performance
There are two main types of performances.
· A Chase the Music event, where all of the songs are selected for the child, and the one original piece is performed. It is really all focused on the child (sometimes a group of children in a similar situation).
· An existing event by the performing group. In this case the performing group is making the Chase the Music song a part of an already scheduled and managed production.

This document is for CTM production coordinators and their teams. It should be used as a guide to a production. Nothing is set in stone, and part of our ethos is ‘do what’s right’. So, if it’s not covered, or is something different – if it’s right – do it. If you want an opinion or outside input – feel free to message us at CTM HQ.
If you are looking for more information, help, or just have questions – see the website
Unless otherwise agreed to, music will be licensed to Chase the Music. You, or your group leader will have the licensing agreements.
Share the music, share the story.
Music with feeling, music for healing.
And after this event, continue to forever “Chase the Music”!

Details matter!
What if…
The child can’t make it?

In general – we just say to be respectful and sensitive. We don’t want to be an added stressor to the family, we just want to give them a wonderful gift. ity to issues
Sensitivity to release of private information – see legal release form.
In general, we ask for the ability to release and use the following information about the child / family:
First name of the child
City/State
Affliction, and status
Rough information of treatment plan
Activities summary of child (in school, likes to play soccer, likes to read…)
Story of the child (how long have they had affliction, what changes has it made to their lives…)
Photos of the child
There is a legal release (separate document) for the childs parents / guardian to sign.

Promotion
Promotion varies depending on the event. It can be absolutely nothing, as in the case where it’s a private event, with limited attendees. It may be supplemental – when it’s a performer produced event. Or it may be a significant effort, in a Chase the Music produced event in a venue with significant amounts of seating.
Ticketing
Generally for a Chase the Music produced event. For a performer produced event – they are in charge and responsible for ticketing. Chase the Music only asks that an adequate number of tickets for the family, and a group of friends, be provided without charge – so that the event is not a burden

Events
1) An event dedicated to just the child. Here all of the music is selected, arranged and performed for the child. One original song is to be written specifically for the child. Example of this was the performances w/ BCP – Chito / Kati.
2) An event where the child’s song is part of a larger event. Other songs are performed, but not related to the Chase the Music composition, nor the child. Examples of this are Thomas, Lauren.

Anything you can do, to get to know the child, situation, family, that can be passed onto the composer and musicians. The musical talent wants to KNOW this child! They want to really feel the energy that is the child. The more you do here, the better the composition and performance will be.
