Can we ask for donations at events?

Yes, BUT… make it discrete. This isn’t putting someone on stage so that we can pull at their heartstrings for money. There should be no ask by the master of ceromonies (MC).

At most, a link off the registration webform – clearly stating that this is an optional donation. A small donation box to the side.
